In early 2020, I purchased a laptop and began designing my own labels, designing business cards, etc. Unfortunately, COVID hit not long after and the candle making was paused while things were so uncertain. During this time, I was able to research the science behind candle making. I had time to make sure we were fully compliant and safe to start selling.
When lockdowns were lifted and some sort of normality returned, I was able to apply for a few markets to see how our products would do! On 3rd October 2020, I started selling at Leeds Market on a small barrow. The top left image is my first ever trading day. I remember going home that night in shock at how many people stopped to look and purchase my products. I ended up trading at Leeds for the next 8 months before applying to trade at York Shambles Market.
At this point, we had a very small range of products; my aim was always small but quality. I wanted to make sure every candle and wax melt was of the highest standard before bringing out something new; something we still stick with today.
I began trading at York Shambles Market on 2nd July 2021 and we still trade there now every Thursday, Friday, Saturday & Sunday. In October 2021, my mum joined the Berry Handcrafted team. Many of you may have met her at the markets! We work together labelling, selling and thinking of future plans for the business.
Fast forward to today, we have a wider range of candles and wax melt scents. We still stick with small but quality. We stock around 8 scents at a time, trying to have something to suit everyone’s taste. Each time we bring a scent out; it goes through the same testing and can take us months to perfect! By doing this, we can guarantee you receive a product of the highest quality. We now have a lovely customer base who come back to see us either every month, 6 months or every Christmas in York. We can’t thank everyone enough who takes the time to come to our stall or who purchases from us online. We are so grateful for all of the support & making it possible for us to carry on every year!
